MY STORY

“I geek out on the periodic table. If I need to write down the word water, I always write down the formula instead, and I like asking people what their favorite element is, and why! I also tell people I love them “with all my hypothalamus,” since it’s where feelings truly come from.”

Born & raised in Venezuela, from an early age Ediuska was obsessed with science and the planets, but also aware that her opportunities were limited

One afternoon, at 8 years old, she stormed into the kitchen while her mom was cooking her famous sweet corn arepas and broke the news: she didn’t want a quinceanera party! The news was tragic for her mom, as quinceanera is a tradition. Instead, Ediuska wanted her parents to put that money towards coming to the U.S. to study and build satellites!

At 15 years old, her parents finally relented. When Ediuska and her mom landed in JFK, it was the first time she had set foot in the U.S. A few days later, her mom went home, leaving Ediuska with her aunt in Queens to begin fulfilling her dream of applying to schools with science programs.

Sure enough, a few years later she graduated with a BS in Aerospace Engineering, followed by a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and a Doctorate in Biomedical Engineering, with her research conducted at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

During her time there she became the first Latina to be elected on the board of the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) and, as an ISB board member, created the second Biomechanics Lab in Venezuela. Her focus shifted to technology on the ground, but her motivation to make a huge impact only increased.

Next she landed a dream job at one of the world's leading medical device + Fortune 100 companies, Stryker.

At Stryker she became an inventor of her own, and received the Stryker Innovation Patent Award for one of her two craniomaxillofacial technology patents.

After seven years of bringing product after product to the global market at Stryker, Ediuska was aching for a way to double down on her expertise to have a greater impact. As a woman from a developing country, she knew first-hand how underserved vulnerable populations are when it comes to accessing emerging medical technologies that can better people's lives.
